Life Gets Better with Magic

The fact that we are alive is extraordinary. We can get so caught up in our pain or the day to day grind that we forget. And when we lose sight, we lose the magic of being alive.

For much of human history, religion—from earth-based practices to Christianity—brought magic into our lives. But for many, religion has become tangled in dogma these days. This leaves us free to find our own magic!  If you’ve yet to find a way to do that, you might find that life has less sparkle. After a while, we can start to feel uninspired and stuck.

So, how can we make life more magical?

Slow Down and Stay Present

Mindfulness is a powerful way to reclaim the enchantment of everyday moments. It’s about doing things with presence and intention.

When you’re eating, slow down. How does your food taste, look, and smell? Where did it come from? How did it grow? Let these moments ground you in the now and fill you with gratitude. You have food and a body that can digest it!

Take a moment to pause and appreciate what’s around you. Listen to a church bell ringing in the distance, watch the flicker of a candle flame, notice the caress of a light breeze (where does wind even come from!?), or marvel at the intricate beauty of a flower. Bringing awareness to everyday acts can transform the mundane into magic.

Marvel at Nature

Nature is endlessly mysterious and magical. Take a walk and notice the beauty in the delicate veins on a leaf or the colors of a sunset. Marvel at your body. Think about all the intricate systems working together that allow you to move, breathe, and live. See the way your hand bends or your eyes dilate with changing light—these are everyday miracles we often overlook. Do you know how many things had to be for that to happen? Reconnecting with this sense of awe can ignite your sense of magic.

Be Curious

Do you remember how it felt to be a child, looking at the world with unbridled curiosity and wonder? The world is still full of mysteries waiting to be explored.

For me, humans are endlessly fascinating. Neuroscience, relationships, and the intricacies of human behavior are all rich areas of exploration. There are always new questions to ask yourself and others, and new things to learn. Maybe you will get clarity or learn a new story?! While people aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, there is something to explore in almost anything if you look! Art? Cooking? Astrology? Whatever excites you, dive in! Asking questions and staying curious allows us to tap into the magic of childlike wonder and discovery.

Be playful

Playfulness is about stepping away from the mundane and allowing joy, imagination, and creativity to shine through. It’s about breaking the routine and injecting joy and magic into the everyday. See if you can find some ways to be playful in your daily life:

  • Inject Fun Into Routines: Turn on your favorite music while cooking or cleaning. Dance while you’re waiting for the coffee to brew. Light a candle or burn some incense while you work. Find small ways to make chores feel like a game.
  • Dress for Joy: Wear something whimsical or colorful that makes you smile. It could be sparkly earrings, a bold scarf, or even socks with a fun pattern.
  • Try Something New: Break your routine by experimenting with a new hobby, taking a different route on your walk, or trying a cuisine you’ve never tasted.
  • Play with Others: Engage in lighthearted activities with friends or family, like board games, charades, or even a spontaneous pillow fight. Let yourself laugh – bold and loudly!
  • Be Silly: Embrace a moment of silliness – sing in the shower, tell jokes, or make funny faces. My kids have a whole repertoire of my bad dance moves they like to pull out when they want to make fun of me. Little do they realize that I have done crazy dancing their whole lives for this very reason! For so much laughter and fun!

So ask yourself, How can I add a little more magic to this moment? Could I be more present? Could I add an element of nature or mystery? Could I add curiosity? Could I add playfulness?

Magic is all around us, just waiting for you to notice. And when you do, life is better.
